Behavioral Health Integration (BHI)

cognitive behavioral theraphy illustrationIntegrating behavioral health care with primary care (“behavioral health integration” or “BHI”) is now widely considered an effective strategy for improving outcomes for patients with mental or behavioral health conditions.

The Psychiatric Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) approach to BHI has shown to improve outcomes. It enhances “usual” primary care by adding key services, such as care management support for patients receiving behavioral health treatment and regular psychiatric inter-specialty consultation to the primary care team, particularly regarding patients whose conditions are not improving.

Medicare pays for services provided to patients participating in a collaborative care program or who are receiving other behavioral health integration (BHI) services. The payment structure may be used for patients with any behavioral health condition being addressed by the treating provider, including substance use disorders.
